Changes within living memory: what changed during Elizabeth II's lifetime?

6 lessons

Description

This unit helps students understand a time span covering four generations before their birth. It teaches about Queen Elizabeth II's reign, offering a simple overview of c.80 years of British history. Students also learn how a major public figure holds authority and performs national duties.

This unit uses and builds on knowledge from pupils' experiences of stories and experiences from EYFS. It builds on traditional stories and songs through which pupils may have been exposed to the past. Knowledge of this period prepares pupils for their study of historical photographs in the following unit, which are largely drawn from a similar timeframe, and for their Year 2 study of diverse significant rulers from differing places and periods.

  1. A princess in wartime Britain
  2. The princess who spoke to the nation
  3. The first televised coronation
  4. The queen’s clothes tell a story
  5. A queen of four nations, head of the Commonwealth
  6. Saying goodbye and remembering a reign
