Taiko drumming

Description

Pupils are introduced to Taiko drumming, performing as an ensemble, composing in groups and learning about the energy that pulse and rhythm can bring to a performance. They learn the key terminology and technique of Taiko and develop an understanding of the culture connected with the music.

Pupils continue to enjoy making music in groups and explore extended structures for performance and composition. They develop their understanding of rhythm and its relationship with pulse and are introduced to shuffle feel. They build on prior skills with ensemble performance and create their own piece, with a focus on rhythmic elements, including silence and creative movement, within a style that offers scaffolded structures and rhythmic ideas. Pupils continue to learn about the importance of correct technique in performance. Tasks can use percussion, practice pads or chair drumming.
