Why this why now

Building on grammatical knowledge from KS3 and thematic knowledge from previous units at KS4, pupils use questions and answers in the present and the perfect tense to communicate about work situations. The addition of relative clauses enables pupils to form longer, more complex sentences. The focus on the imperative, which is new learning, will allow pupils to practise talking in both formal and informal situations, differentiating between talking to colleagues or other adults and their friends. This understanding of formal and informal language is a key skill to develop going forward at KS4.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know the question words que ?, qui ?, quand ?, où ?, comment ?, quoi ?, pourquoi ? and combien ?.
  • Pupils can form questions in the present and past tense using question words, intonation and inversion.
  • Pupils can use the relative pronoun 'qui' in subject relative clauses.
  • Pupils know the irregular verbs boire, voir and croire in the present tense singular forms.
  • Pupils know the irregular verb faire in all persons of the verb in the present tense.
  • Pupils can use the interrogative adjective quel (le) (es) in its different forms.
