Travailler en France: questions in present tense, relative clauses

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can ask and answer questions in the present tense relating to working in France and I can use relative clauses with 'qui'.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Questions are formed by subject-verb inversion, adding est-ce que or intonation. Question words can be added to start.
      2. A relative clause provides more information about a noun or pronoun from the previous clause.
      3. Qui means 'who?' in a question, but it also means 'who', 'which', or 'that' in the middle of a sentence.

      Keywords

      • Relative clause - adds information about the noun in the main clause

      • Qui - meaning 'who', 'which' or 'that' when used in the middle of a sentence

      Common misconception

Que can be used in a subject relative clause e.g. le prof que s'appelle M. Jones est sympa.

When the relative clause introduces a verb to describe a subject, 'qui' must be used and not 'que'. E.g. le prof qui s'appelle M. Jones est sympa.
