Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The imperative is used in a wide range of scenarios such as recipe instructions, job adverts and giving commands.
      2. Using the imperative in conversation enables the speaker to give instructions and advice.
      3. In a role-play scenario it is important to consider who you are talking to, and whether to use the 'tu' or 'vous' form.
      4. Planning a speaking task answer carefully, pre-rehearsal, and immediate repetition of the task improve performance.

      Keywords

      • Imperative - a mood used to tell somebody to do something or give instructions or commands

      Common misconception

The 'vous' form of address is only used for plural situations.

In formal situations, it is essential to address somebody as 'vous' in order to be polite and to show respect. Careful consideration of the context of a conversation is very important.

      Teacher tip

Teachers may wish to use the role-play task slides (B1 and B2) as a model to create a further role-play task in the context of applying for a job.

      Equipment

Mini whiteboards and pens are useful if available.
