Why this why now

Prior to this unit, pupils have studied songs sung for a range of purposes, including songs that evoke a feeling, work songs, community songs, and songs that tell a story. Pupils now start to explore the concept of being united through songs. Building on their knowledge of songs changing over time, there is an increased focus on conveying meaning and mood through song, which is explored further in later units.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know the importance of warming up in order to protect their vocal health and develop their vocal technique.
  • Pupils have sung a range of age-appropriate songs that capture a mood or an emotion.
  • Pupils have a secure sense of pulse and accurate intonation when singing together.
  • Pupils understand that people sing together for a variety of reasons.
  • Pupils have added layers to a song to create harmony, including a second vocal line and simple instrumental accompaniments.
  • Pupils understand how to rehearse effectively to improve a performance.
