Why this why now

Pupils have previously explored the concepts of friendship and community within the classroom in Year 1. This unit broadens that understanding by focusing on the wider school and local community, helping pupils recognise the people who support them and their own roles. In Year 2, pupils are developing greater awareness of the world beyond their immediate environment, making it timely to explore community membership and responsibility.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils should know that they belong to groups such as their family, class and school, and that being part of a group means caring for others.
  • Pupils may understand that rules, manners and caring actions help communities to work well and feel welcoming for everyone.
  • Pupils can identify trusted adults in their school community such as teachers, teaching assistants and other school staff.
