      Why this why now

At Year 6, pupils are developing a more developed understanding of equality and justice as they prepare for diverse secondary environments. Building on previous learning about diversity, this unit deepens understanding of racial and cultural differences through exploring racism's history in Britain and the Windrush generation. This is timely as pupils need context for modern race relations and skills to challenge discrimination.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Pupils should know from Year 4 and Year 5 that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, fairness and dignity regardless of their race, culture or background.
      • Pupils may understand from earlier learning what stereotypes are, that they can be unfair and harmful and that racial stereotypes cause discrimination.
      • Pupils should be familiar with the Equality Act and should know that the law in Britain protects people from discrimination based on race.
      • Pupils should know from Key Stage 2 that Britain is a diverse country with people from many different races, cultures and backgrounds living together.
      • Pupils may understand from other learning that attitudes and laws about equality have changed over time and that people have fought for fairness.
