This unit provides a foundation for 'Europe: What is it like to live in Northern Italy?', which extends and deepens pupils’ understanding of physical and human geography and processes through a case study of Northern Italy as a region of Europe.

This Unit extends and deepens pupils’ understanding of physical and human geography and processes through a study of the diverse landscapes and places of Europe. 

This unit introduces Europe as a continent of many countries, climates and landscapes. Pupils use maps to locate countries and cities, explore physical and human features, and consider how people live, travel and visit different parts of Europe.

Europe: how diverse are its landscapes and places?

The weather of a place is the day to day condition of the atmosphere, e.g. sunny, snowing, warm etc.

Climate is an average of weather conditions (e.g. rain, sun, wind) in a place taken over a long period of time (usually 30 years or more).

The Equator is an imaginary line encircling Earth at 0° latitude and is an equal distance from the North Pole and the South Pole.

Lines of latitude are imaginary lines on Earth showing position north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees.

Climate change is a large-scale and long-term change in the planet’s climate, including weather patterns and average temperatures.

Settlements are places where groups of people live and work

A major city is a large city with a population of over 100,000 and may be the largest city in the region

A capital city is the place in a country where the government ‘sits’ and has its centre of power

A map key is a box of information on a map that tells you what the lines and symbols on the map mean.

The scale on a map shows what size the area that is represented in the map really is.

An interpretation is an opinion on or explanation of the meaning of something.

A physical feature is natural and has not been built by humans.

Land use is the function or purpose of a particular area.

A human feature is something that humans have made or built.

Spatial patterns show the links between where things are located.

A destination is a place that someone or something travels or is sent to.

Tourism activities are the things that people travel somewhere to do.

An economic benefit is something that is good for a place in terms of money or jobs.

An environmental problem is the negative effect on the environment from an action or activity.
