Description

In this unit, pupils analyse why a Norman Duke, William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066. They learn about the succession crisis of 1066 and the three major battles that took place in this year, ultimately leading to William being crowned King of England.

This unit uses and builds on the year 5 and 6 knowledge that pupils have of Anglo-Saxon England along with additional knowledge they built concerning this topic that they built in the previous key stage 4 unit. It also enriches their understanding of the early period of the Norman Conquest that they developed at the start of year 7. This unit prepares pupils for the next, where pupils deepen their understanding of the Conquest by studying the measures taken by William to subdue his kingdom.

  1. Claimants to the throne in 1066
  2. The battles of Gate Fulford and Stamford Bridge
  3. The Battle of Hastings
  4. Reasons for William’s victory at the Battle of Hastings

  • Pupils know that Edward the Confessor died without an heir.
