Description

In this unit, pupils analyse the changes that took place to the civil rights movement with the growth of Black Power. They learn about the role of Malcolm X, the Black Panther Party and the riots of 1965-67. They also look at King Jr's unsuccessful campaign in the north.

This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge of the character and successes of the Civil Rights movement in the early to mid 1960s. Knowledge of those developments, and the success of the movement in legal terms is fundamental to understanding the rise of the Black Power movement in the mid to late 1960s. This unit, along with previous ones concerning the Civil Rights movement, prepare pupils for future key stage 4 units about the USA and their involvement in Vietnam, and the impact this had on the USA domestically.

  1. The role of Malcolm X in the civil rights movement
  2. The emergence of the Black Power movement
  3. The Black Panther Party
  4. The riots of 1965-67 and the Kerner Report (1968)
  5. King's campaign in the North
  6. How successful was the civil rights movement by 1975?
