Following study into the establishment of religious law and the expectation of believers to also follow secular leaders, pupils are equipped to look at examples of where individuals have challenged authority based on interpretation and conscience. Pupils will engage with this through case studies. Martin Luther builds on work on denominations in Year 7 and the study of Dietrich Bonhoeffer during Autumn 2 is a precursor to work completed by schools on Holocaust memorial in January.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils will know that most Christians follow laws such as the Ten Commandments.
- Pupils will now Christian teaching about loving your enemy and forgiveness.
- Pupils will know that the Christian religion has different denominations.
- Pupils will know that dharma means acting with compassion.

In this unit pupils study three case studies of individuals who challenged authority. They will analyse the inspiration behind their actions and the historical impact of their choices. Pupils will reason the degree to which religious beliefs might cause someone to challenge authority.
