Why this why now

This unit deepens pupils' knowledge of physical processes and demonstrates how they interact with the human environment. Pupils will gain insight into how humans cope with risk and how they can build their resilience in both sustainable and unsustainable ways. Focussing on coasts at this stage in the curriculum gives the opportunity for pupils to develop their locational knowledge of the UK and deepen their understanding of how the UK has been shaped by its maritime position.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • The coast is where the land meets the sea.
  • Waves are caused by wind blowing over the sea.
  • Some coastlines have sandy beaches, while others have rocky cliffs.
  • Erosion can change the shape of the coastline over time.
  • Tides are the regular rise and fall of the sea level.
  • Different animals and plants live in coastal areas.
  • People use coasts for activities like fishing, tourism, and transport.
  • Coastal areas can be affected by storms and flooding.
