Downloads can take a few minutes, especially for larger files or slower connections.

Why this why now

This unit will build on the previous learning about geology to help p[pupils understand one of the key physical systems shaping the Earth's physical environment. Pupils will be able to develop their understanding of physical processes before considering how humans seek to mitigate risk in tectonically active areas to increase their reliance. Pupils will use the knowledge gained in this unit when studying the volcanoes of the Democratic Republic of Congo in a future unit.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Tectonic processes help form many of the world's rocks.
  • Volcanoes are vents in the earth where magma comes to the surface.
  • Earthquakes are where the ground shakes.
  • Some parts of the world have major earthquakes and volcanoes whereas other parts of the world do not.
  • The population of the world has risen rapidly to over eight billion.
  • Countries are often categorised as low income, middle income or high income countries depending upon their wealth.
  • The Democratic Republic of Congo is a country in west Africa.

Tectonic hazards: Why is Earth restless?

This unit teaches pupils about the physical processes that lead to tectonic hazards and investigates the geographical pattern of hazards across the world. Pupils will also learn how tectonic hazards affect people in different places and how people seek to manage hazards.
