Description

This unit teaches pupils about climate change (causes, impacts and responses) together with extreme weather events, specifically tropical cyclones.

This unit naturally builds on pupils prior knowledge gained from studying weather and climate at KS3. Climate change underpins many of the issues considered in subsequent units, such as global economic development, energy resources and urban planning.

  1. Global atmospheric circulation model, pressure belts and surface winds
  2. Evidence for climate change in the Quaternary period
  3. Natural and human causes of climate change
  4. Effects of climate change on people and the environment
  5. Tropical storms – distribution, formation and development
  6. Tropical storms – hazards and effects
  7. Tropical storms – responses
  8. Reducing risks from effects of tropical storms
  9. Examples of preparation and responses to tropical cyclones
  10. Using GIS to visualise climate change impacts
  11. Using GIS to map the track of a tropical storm
