Description

This unit teaches pupils about coastal processes and landforms. Pupils will learn about the physical processes operating at the coast and about the formation of distinctive landforms of coastal erosion and deposition. Pupils will also learn about the importance and options of coastal management.

Pupils can build on their previous knowledge of the UK's physical geography and geology by focusing on processes and landforms at the coast. Pupils can also make comparisons with river landscapes, studied in the previous unit. Knowledge from this unit will support the fieldwork unit.

  1. The role of geology in coastal erosion
  2. The role of climate, marine and sub-aerial processes in coastal erosion
  3. The influence of sediment transportation and deposition on coastal landscapes
  4. The effect of human activities on coastal landscapes
  5. Change in a named coastal landscape
  6. Risks from coastal flooding
  7. Costs and benefits of management strategies
