Djembe drumming and rhythms from the regions of West Africa

Description

Pupils are introduced to drumming from the regions of West Africa, performing as an ensemble and developing their understanding of djembe technique, the structure and musical conventions of the music, how rhythm and tempo are used to create excitement and the culture connected with the music.

Pupils develop their ensemble skills and rhythmic understanding, performing and composing in extended structures, 12/8 time signatures and multiple rhythmic parts, allowing for part switching between more complex rhythms. They develop their understanding of syncopation though aural copying and grid notation, creating their own piece, focusing on rhythmic elements, with opportunity to build more complex polyrhythms and improvise extended rhythmic ideas. They learn the key instruments and technique of drumming from the regions of West Africa. Body percussion can be used instead of djembes.
