This unit builds on the dharma unit in Year 7. It goes beyond storytelling of the life of Siddhartha Gautama to consider the richness of interpretation of the three jewels and the diversity within the Buddhist community. It contributes to balance between Abrahamic and Dharmic worldviews and prepares pupils for study at Key Stage 4.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils will know that Buddhism is a dharmic worldview.
  • Pupils will know the term dharma or dhamma and be able to explain its meaning.
  • Pupils will know that social scientists study religion by tools such as interviewing people and analysing data.
  • Pupils will know that within a religion different people may have different worldviews.
