This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge of spelling rules associated with homophones learnt in the Year 2 unit 'Year 2: Alternative GPCs for consonants and homophones'. In this unit, pupils learn spelling and grammar conventions associated with prefixes meaning 'not', like dis-, non-, mis- and un-, as well as the spelling of homophones, homonyms and some compound words, applying newly taught spellings to a sentence context. This unit prepares pupils for further homophone work in the Year 4 unit 'Year 4: Suffixes, etymology and homophones'.
Prior knowledge requirements
- The primary grapheme phoneme correspondence (GPC) for all 40+ phonemes.
- The alternative representations of vowel sounds and consonants.
- The spelling of common exception words for Year 1 and Year 2 (English Appendix 1).
- The ability to divide words into syllables.
- The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 2: Spelling 1'.
- The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 2: Spelling 2'.
- The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 2: Spelling 3'.
- The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 3: Spelling 1'.
