How does the rule of law contribute to fairness?

2 lessons

Description

This unit explores how the rule of law operates in society. Pupils examine equality before the law, judicial independence, legal certainty and access to justice, and how these support fairness and trust.

This unit develops pupils’ understanding of the rule of law by moving from defining it to examining how it operates through systems and institutions. It builds on KS2 knowledge of fairness and prepares pupils to evaluate how these systems function and can be challenged.

  1. What is the rule of law, and how does it support a fair society?
  2. Who decides what is fair under the law?

  • Pupils understand that the rule of law means everyone follows the law.
  • Pupils know laws help maintain fairness and safety.
  • Pupils understand that laws apply equally to everyone.
  • Pupils recognise that people can get help if laws are broken.
  • Pupils can describe fairness beyond personal situations.
