Why this why now

Pupils will already have learnt singular forms of essential verbs '’être’, ’avoir’ and 'il y a'. In this unit, knowledge of these verbs, regular adjectives and possessives 'mon, ma, ton, ta' is anchored in the context of making friends. Pupils then learn that 'avoir', also means 'be', broadening their communicative range to age and states e.g., cold. As well as securing numbers 1-12, pupils expand their range of high frequency words, learning months of the year, and several parts of the body. In a later unit, pupils will learn adjective placement after nouns with these core verbs.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know numbers 1-12.
  • Pupils know singular forms of irregular verbs 'avoir' and 'être', and 'il y a'.
  • Pupils know at least 20 high-frequency French adjectives.
  • Pupils know that singular adjectives agree for gender.
  • Pupils know that possessive adjectives 'my' and 'you' agree for gender.
