Description

In this unit, pupils learn singular persons of new -er verbs ‘aimer’ to like and ‘préférer’ to prefer to express likes and preferences. They use reference resources to personalise their responses, researching new nouns. Pupils also develop phonics, learning a new spelling [ai] for the [ê/è] sound.

Having previously practised the identical sound written [ê] and [è], this unit teaches [ai] which has the same sound. Pupils also add to their er-verb lexicon with two new verbs. Asking for and giving opinions and preferences extends pupils' communicative repertoire, and is supported by opportunities to research new nouns in order to give more individual responses. Opinion verbs in French require definite articles where they are not used in English, so this unit provides a further opportunity for pupils to embed these in a more challenging context, which they will revisit again later.

  1. Likes: 'aimer', 'mon, ma' and 'ton, ta'
  2. My friend: singular -er verbs
  3. Preferences: singular verbs of opinion
  4. Preferences: extending my sentences

  • Pupils have secure knowledge of the sound-symbol correspondences [ê|è].
  • Pupils know the singular forms of regular -er verbs in the present.
  • Pupils know the singular definite articles 'le', 'la' and 'l'.
  • Pupils know how to turn statements into intonation questions by raising tone of voice at the end.
