Why this why now
Pupils will already know that adjectives agree for gender. In this unit, they learn that many adjectives follow the noun, whilst in English they come before it. This unit builds upon pupils' prior knowledge of noun gender, teaching that the French pronouns for 'it' match noun gender, so that 'il' is both 'he' and 'it', and 'elle' is 'she' and 'it'. Securing pupils' use of singular forms of verbs 'be, being' and 'have, having' in multiple contexts, this unit is solid preparation for future units, which introduce plural persons of these essential verbs.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils know singular persons of the irregular verbs 'avoir' and 'être' in the present tense.
- Pupils know that singular adjectives agree for gender.
- Pupils know that singular pronouns 'il' and 'elle' mean 'he' and 'she', referring to people.
