Why this why now
This unit extends pupils' verb knowledge as building a verb lexicon is essential early knowledge. First, pupils learn some high frequency regular -er verbs and how these translate two ways into English, e.g., 'to listen' and 'listening'. Related phonics include er/é/ez and contrastive eu, è/ê. Next, pupils learn singular forms of -er verbs to talk about what they and others do. Knowledge of determiners extends to definite articles and possessives 'mon, ma, ton, ta'. Practice in several contexts anchors this new knowledge, which pupils will later secure and develop in further contexts.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils know the singular indefinite articles 'un' and 'une'.
- Pupils understand the concept of grammatical gender and how it is reflected in the words for 'a/an' in French.
- Pupils know singular person of two common irregular verbs: '‘être’ and 'avoir'.
- Pupils know that French verb forms change endings to match the subject acting on the verb.
