Why this why now

This unit continues to build on prior singular and plural verb knowledge, introducing plural 'avoir'. Liaison with -s and Silent Final e are important complementary sound-symbol correspondences. Postnominal adjectives, including plural forms, are revisited and anchored in new contexts, including physical description. Later in the unit, high frequency adjectives that come before the noun are introduced. The unit brings language together in an extended description of a friend.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that word final -s can be pronounced before a word beginning with a vowel, and that this is called 'liaison'. For example, the -s of 'les' in 'les amis'.
  • Pupils know that a silent final 'e' on French words means that the final consonant is pronounced. For example, 'timide'.
  • Pupils know that adjectives agree for gender and number.
  • Pupils know many adjectives follow the noun.
  • Pupils know plural pronouns 'nous', 'vous', 'ils' and 'elles'.
  • Pupils know plural verb forms of 'être' and regular -er verbs.
