Why this why now
The growth of cities around the world, especially in emerging and developing economies, shows the importance of understanding how and why cities develop and change. Pupils will build on prior learning on development and population to compare cities in different places and look at the opportunities and challenges for the people living there. Pupils will use their knowledge of cities in future regional units, where there is a focus on key cities in geographically important places.
Prior knowledge requirements
- The population of the world has risen rapidly to over eight billion.
- China and India have grown in population and economic power over the last 50 years.
- Countries are often categorised as low income, middle income or high income countries depending upon their wealth.
- Countries where manufacturing of products has risen rapidly over the last 50 years are often referred to as Newly Industrialised Countries (NICs)
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can give us information about differences across the world.
- Global warming is caused by the increase in greenhouse gas emissions released by humans.
- Migration refers to the movement of people, this has occurred throughout history.
