Why this why now

Pupils will already have experienced a wide range of moderate to vigorous activity based fitness. This unit takes an alternative approach by considering ways to calm the mind and body but also to improve flexibility and holistic health. They will have already learnt about principles of training and this unit requires maturity and an open mind to make the most of it. Later in health and wellbeing pupils will explore exercises associated with martial arts and self-defence as they continue to discover, fine tune and commit to lifelong fitness habits.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that physical activity can improve mental wellbeing as well as physical wellbeing.
  • Pupils understand that holding poses requires good body tension.
  • Pupils are able to lead/create their own basic routines in gymnastics/dance.
  • Pupils show an awareness of each other and know that different people have different limits/ abilities in different moves.
