Description

In this unit, pupils read and explore the non-fiction picturebook text, 'Shackleton's Journey'. They explore the context of the Antarctic expedition and examine the layout features of the text. Finally, pupils answer a range of comprehension questions and engage with the key themes.

This unit builds on the Y5 unit, 'Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover: reading', where pupils read and discussed a non-fiction, picturebook narrative based on space exploration. In this unit, pupils will read and discuss a more complex non-fiction, picturebook narrative, based on true events of an Antarctic expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1914. Pupils will use layout features and inference and retrieval skills to develop comprehension. This unit prepares pupils for the future unit, 'When the Sky Falls; reading', where they will read a text set during a similar time in history.
