Description

In this unit, pupils write a full narrative based on a rewritten version of the classic 'The Happy Prince'. Pupils write an opening, build-up, climax and resolution, focusing on all parts of the narrative arc in turn and building a full understanding of how each narrative section builds on another.

This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge of the narrative writing style from the Year 4 unit 'Jabberwocky': narrative writing'. The unit starts with an analysis of a rewritten version of the classic text, 'The Happy Prince', which involves pupils exploring the moral and characters of the text. Pupils then write their own version of the complete narrative, writing an opening, build-up, climax and resolution and learning to use specific devices for each narrative section. This unit prepares pupils for more narrative writing in the Year 4 unit, ''Whale Rider': narrative writing'.
