Pupils will already have improved their ability to perform in a range of athletic events with a focus on personal best improvements. They will have learnt about different components of fitness and the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Pupils have worked in small teams but now the focus is on training for specific fitness goals that can be achieved within 12 weeks. Later in athletics and health and wellbeing pupils will seek further opportunities to exercise in the outdoor environment.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils know many key technical points and rules for various types of running, jumping and throwing events.
- Pupils understand that they must take responsibility for the safety of themselves and all involved in dangerous activities.
- Pupils are able to perform several athletics events to a technically sound level.
- Pupils show a willingness to receive constructive feedback on performance in order to bring about improvements.

Athletics: fitness development of pace or power
This unit will develop pupils’ independence by supporting them to train and improve their pacing to sustain steady state running and/ or their power. Pupils will be exposed to different types of training as they apply the FITT principle to improve their fitness through track and field activities.
