Description

In this unit pupils will develop knowledge of technology in society and its effects on design. Through the life cycle assessment of popular products, they will learn how to be responsible designers.

Understanding the circular economy and being able to assess the life cycle of a product is key to becoming a responsible designer. Pupils will learn about the environmental, social and moral issues of designing products through a smartphone case study. This environmental knowledge builds on the learning in the Year 8 'Materials testing' unit and the Year 7 'Principles of materials and manufacturing' unit. This unit prepares students to apply responsible design principles to the Year 10 units 'Iterative design: Nature' and 'Interative design: Student Living'.
