Description

This unit will develop pupils' knowledge of the physical and mechanical properties of materials. They will compare material properties through testing, with a focus on metals. The ecological and social impact of materials will also be introduced.

Material selection and justification are key to successful design development. This unit builds on the Year 7 unit, 'Principles of materials and manufacturing,' where pupils learnt how to group materials and manufacturing processes. This unit will develop pupils' confidence when articulating design decisions independently in the subsequent iterative design units in Year 10, 'Iterative design: Nature' and 'Interative design: Student Living'.
