Description

Using knowledge of timber properties and processes, pupils will work together to design a batch of tactile toys. They will prepare a manufacturing plan and develop their knowledge of quality control, applying this to checks throughout manufacturing to produce the batch within acceptable tolerances.

Pupils need to develop and apply knowledge of industrial manufacturing processes and understand their limitations. This unit introduces scales of production with a focus on batch production and collaborative design. This unit builds upon the knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes learnt in the previous unit in Year 7, 'Materials and manufacturing', and the Year 6 unit, 'Cams: automata', during which pupils developed their knowledge and skills for ensuring accuracy when manufacturing. This unit prepares pupils for the technical principles unit in Key Stage 4.
