Description

Pupils will handle, shape and join sheet materials using different manufacturing processes. They will test and experiment with different mechanical fixing methods and adhesives and then use this knowledge to explain which choices are suitable and why.

Knowledge of how to identify different materials and their properties alongside different manufacturing processes is fundamental for pupils to design and make with increasing independence. This unit builds on pupils' knowledge of materials from the Year 6 unit, 'People and places'. This unit also builds on the manufacturing processes of cutting and shaping timber materials in the Year 6 unit, 'Cams: automata'. This lays the foundations for pupils to manufacture safely and accurately in the Year 8 unit, 'Collaborative design: tactile toys to teach'.

  1. Materials in design
  2. Wasting manufacturing processes
  3. Material selection
  4. Fabricating manufacturing processes
  5. Material sustainability
  6. Deforming manufacturing processes
  7. Minimising material waste
  8. Reforming manufacturing processes

  • Pupils can identify material catergories used previously
  • Pupils can measure and mark out sheet material using a ruler
  • Pupils can cut sheet material using scissors and a tennon saw appropiately
