Description

In this unit pupils study three case studies of individuals who challenged authority. They will analyse the inspiration behind their actions and the historical impact of their choices. Pupils will reason the degree to which religious beliefs might cause someone to challenge authority.

Following study into the establishment of religious law and the expectation of believers to also follow secular leaders, pupils are equipped to look at examples of where individuals have challenged authority based on interpretation and conscience. Pupils will engage with this through case studies. Martin Luther builds on work on denominations in Year 7 and the study of Dietrich Bonhoeffer during Autumn 2 is a precursor to work completed by schools on Holocaust memorial in January.

  1. Martin Luther and the Reformation
  2. Reaching heaven by faith alone
  3. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the pacifist
  4. Fighting against unjust laws
  5. Vandana Shiva: protecting the earth
  6. Dharma, Bhumi and the environment
