This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge of homophones learnt in the Year 5 unit 'Year 5: Noun suffixes, letter strings and homophones'. In this unit, pupils build and review a range of spelling patterns with a focus on homonyms, homophones and a wide range of suffixes. Pupils review how the addition of a suffix can affect the grammar of a word, for example its word class or tense. This unit prepares pupils to learn further spelling rules in the Year 6 unit, 'Year 6: Letter strings, etymology and curriculum words'.
