Description

In this unit pupils will be introduced to the concept of data compression and why it is needed. The will compare lossy and lossless compression methods and their typical uses. They will have the opportunity to compression methods such as run length encoding (RLE) and Huffman coding.

This unit progresses pupils' knowledge and understanding of data representations and compression. They will be introduced to why compression is needed and the difference between lossy and lossless compression. Pupils will develop an understanding of compression techniques and will practice applying them using sample data.

  1. Measurements of storage
  2. The need for compression
  3. Lossy and lossless compression
  4. Comparing compression algorithms
  5. Practical applications of compression
