Why this why now

Having previously created and manipulated 2D vector images, pupils are now ready to explore how these skills translate into three dimensions. This unit introduces the fundamentals of 3D modelling and animation, showing how shapes, textures and movement combine to create realistic digital worlds. By working with tools used by professionals, pupils develop an understanding of how complex animations are built. Learning this now helps them appreciate the creative and technical processes behind modern media, preparing them to take on more ambitious digital projects with confidence and precision.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils understand what vector images are and have experience of creating them.
  • Pupils can find and use suitable digital artefacts.
  • Pupils can recognise the limitations placed on digital artefacts they find.

3D animation

In this unit pupils will discover how to create 3D animations using industry-standard software. They will gain a greater understanding of how 3D animation is used to make the media products that we consume. They will explore the basics of modelling, texturing, animating to create 3D models.
