Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge of GPCs learnt in the Year 2 unit 'Year 2: Alternative GPCs for long vowels'. Pupils learn to spell homophones, near-homophones and new GPCs for consonant sounds, learning relevant rules and how to apply new spellings in a sentence context. This unit prepares pupils for the Year 2 unit 'Year 2: Suffixes', in which pupils will learn spelling rules associated with suffixes.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • The primary grapheme phoneme correspondence (GPC) for all 40+ phonemes.
  • The alternative representations of the long vowel sounds and some consonants.
  • The ability to blend and segment words.
  • The spelling of common exception words (English Appendix 1).
  • The ability to divide words into syllables.
  • The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 2: Spelling 1'
