Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge of spelling homophones, near-homophones and new consonant sounds learnt in the Year 2 unit 'Year 2: Alternative GPCs for consonants and homophones'. Here, pupils learn spelling rules associated with suffixes, learning relevant rules and how to apply new suffix spellings in a sentence context. They learn how the addition of a suffix can affect the grammar of a word, for example by changing its word class or tense. This unit prepares pupils for further suffix work in the Year 3 unit 'Year 3: Writing -ed and -ing suffixes'.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • The primary grapheme phoneme correspondence (GPC) for all 40+ phonemes.
  • The alternative representations of the long vowel sounds and some consonants.
  • The ability to blend and segment words.
  • The spelling of common exception words (English Appendix 1).
  • The ability to divide words into syllables.
  • The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 2: Spelling 1'.
  • The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 2: Spelling 2'.
