Adding '-es' to nouns ending in 'y'

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can turn nouns that end in 'y' into plurals.

      Key learning points

      1. A suffix is a letter or group of letters at the end of a word which creates another word.
      2. Adding '-s' or '-es' to a noun creates a plural.
      3. The 'y' is changed to 'i' before '-es' is added.

      Keywords

      • Singular - only one

      • Plural - more than one

      • Noun - a naming word

      • Suffix - a letter or group of letters at the end of a word which creates another word

      Common misconception

Pupils may think that all nouns can be made plural by adding an 's'.

Remind pupils that there are some other ways to show more than one, such as one goose, two geese or one child, two children.

      Teacher tip

You can use the grammar lessons in Year 1 and Year 2 to recap knowledge linked to word class, singluar and plurals.
