Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. tion' is the most common spelling of /shun/.
  2. How to spell the common exception word: Monday.
  3. Monday is a proper noun and is spelt using a capital letter.
  4. A suffix is a letter or group of letters at the end of a word which creates another word.

Common misconception

Pupils may think all suffixes can be added directly onto the end of a word.

Explain there are many types of suffix and different rules for using them. It takes time to learn all the different rules.

Keywords

  • Suffix - a group of letters added to the end of a root word

  • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

  • Proper noun - a naming word that needs capitalisation

Use pupils' misconceptions from the practice tasks to review together, without judgement, and to identify rules that can help with areas of difficulty e.g. Are all sounds being represented in a word? Are connections being made to the root word?
