Description

This unit teaches pupils about ecosystems and biomes at different scales. Pupils learn about the factors influencing biome distribution and the physical systems and processes regulating them. Pupils will also learn about the impact of population growth and resource extraction on biomes.

Pupils can build on their knowledge of biomes and ecosystems developed in KS3 to develop a better understanding of the processes and factors influencing their distribution. Teaching the unit as this stage allows pupils to use the knowledge gained in subsequent units on the tropical rainforest and hot desert/cold environments. It also allows pupils to use their knowledge as a context for filedwork studies later in the course.

  1. Understanding small-scale ecosystems
  2. Changes in small-scale ecosystems
  3. The distribution and characteristics of global biomes
  4. The factors affecting biome distribution
  5. Using GIS to visualise the distribution and characteristics of global biomes
