Description

This unit teaches pupils about patterns and trends in global urbanisation. Pupils study regional variations, patterns and growth in urbanisation and the development of megacities. Pupils also learn about the changing factors affecting growth, urban land uses and sustainable urban living.

Pupils can build on their knowledge of global urban geography from KS3 to develop a greater depth of understanding of the processes and consequences of urbanisation. This unit sets the scene and provides an appropriate context for the more detailed city case study (Jakarta) in the next unit.

  1. Global trends in urbanisation
  2. Factors affecting the growth of cities
  3. Sustainable urban living
  4. Using GIS to visualise global trends in urbanisation
