Why this why now

Pupils can build on their knowledge of weather and climate developed in KS3 to consider the global context before focusing on tropical cyclones. Teaching the unit at this stage enables pupils to apply knowledge of hazards learned earlier in the year to the weather. It also allows pupils to use their knowledge of weather hazards when addressing development issues in subsequent units.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils have locational knowledge of the world - continents, regions and countries
  • Pupils know the difference between weather and climate
  • Pupils understand the concept of circulation
  • Pupils can interpret evidence on maps, diagrams and photos, including satellite images
  • Pupils understand the concept of hazards, including primary and secondary impacts
  • Pupils understand the difference between short-term and long-term responses
  • Pupils have locational knowledge of the UK
  • Pupils can describe change using graphs and extrapolate into the future

Weather hazards

This unit teaches pupils about weather hazards at the global and national (UK) scales. Pupils learn about global atmospheric circulation before focusing on the formation, impacts and responses to tropical storms. Pupils also learn about extreme weather events in the UK.
