Description

This unit teaches pupils about natural and tectonic hazards, their location, causes and effects. Pupils learn about the different types of hazard before focusing on earthquakes and volcanoes. Pupils will learn about tectonic processes, hazard impacts and the options for mitigation and adaptation.

Pupils can build on their knowledge of earthquakes and volcanoes studied at KS3, and on their global locational knowledge to develop a more in-depth understanding of natural hazards. Having studied physical systems and processes at the global scale, pupils can go on to learn about smaller-scale landscape processes, such as rivers and coasts.

  1. An introduction to natural hazards
  2. Factors affecting hazard risk
  3. Plate tectonics theory
  4. Global distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes
  5. Processes at constructive/divergent plate margins
  6. Processes at destructive/convergent plate margins
  7. Processes at conservative plate margins
  8. Primary and secondary effects and responses to tectonic hazards
  9. An example of effects and responses to a tectonic hazard in an HIC
  10. An example of effects and responses to a tectonic hazard in an LIC
  11. Reducing risks from earthquakes and volcanoes
  12. Using GIS to visualise physical processes at different types of plate margin
