Why this why now
Pupils can build on their knowledge of earthquakes and volcanoes studied at KS3, and on their global locational knowledge to develop a more in-depth understanding of natural hazards. Having studied physical systems and processes at the global scale, pupils can go on to learn about smaller-scale landscape processes, such as rivers and coasts.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils have global locational knowledge and can use atlas maps
- Pupils will be able to describe and interpret patterns on maps and graphs
- Pupils understand the concept of 'hazards' as applied to the physical world
- Pupils have an understanding of geological time in the context of tectonic processes
- Pupils understand that hazards can have primary and secondary impacts
- Pupils understand the difference between short-term and long-term responses to hazards
- Pupils can describe, interpret and infer using photos
- Pupils understand the role of development (HIC/LIC) on hazard impacts and responses
- Pupils understand that management ca reduce the impacts of hazards

Natural and tectonic hazards
This unit teaches pupils about natural and tectonic hazards, their location, causes and effects. Pupils learn about the different types of hazard before focusing on earthquakes and volcanoes. Pupils will learn about tectonic processes, hazard impacts and the options for mitigation and adaptation.
