This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge of noun suffixes and letter strings learnt in the Year 5 unit, 'Year 5: Noun suffixes, letter strings and homophones'. Here, pupils review and learn a wide range of Year 6 level spellings: letter strings; words with suffixes -ant, -ance, -ent, -ence, -able and -ible; words with silent letters; words with French and Greek origin; curriculum words; words hyphenated to join prefixes to root words; and words hyphenated to create adjectives. This unit prepares pupils for review in the Year 6 unit 'Year 6: Review and revision of all taught spelling'.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 5: Spelling 1'.
  • The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 5: Spelling 2'.
  • The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 5: Spelling 3'.
  • The knowledge outlined in the unit 'Year 6: Spelling 1'.
  • The vocabulary, grammar and punctuation for Year 5, as set out in National Curriculum Appendix 2.
