      Spelling key curriculum words

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can choose and use spelling strategies to spell curriculum words.

      Key learning points

      1. How to spell the curriculum words: pronunciation, explanation and dictionary.
      2. How to spell the curriculum words: disastrous, mischievous and marvellous.
      3. How to spell the curriculum words: frequently, immediately, especially and sincerely.
      4. Spelling strategies help us to notice how words are spelled.
      5. The practice spelling strategy you choose often depends on the spelling you are practising and what makes it difficult.

      Keywords

      • Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning

      • Letter sting - a group of letters that are written together in a word

      • Root word - the base word from which other words are formed often by adding prefixes or suffixes

      Common misconception

When starting a strategy, pupils may have copied the spelling down incorrectly.

Model the process of looking at it, considering what's difficult about the spelling and thinking about it. Then, model copying it for the first time, carefully checking each letter and verbalising what you notice.

      Teacher tip

Set some time aside for pupils to look through their work and pick out spellings that they recognise they need to practise. Encourage them to choose and use a spelling strategy that is best suited to the particular spelling they are practising.
