Spelling words from the Y5/6 curriculum list

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use spelling strategies to spell curriculum words.

      Key learning points

      1. How to spell the curriculum words: available, vegetable, physical and symbol.
      2. How to spell the curriculum words: convenience, existence and conscience.
      3. How to spell the curriculum words: equipped, attached and thorough.
      4. Spelling strategies help us to notice how words are spelled.
      5. The practice spelling strategy you choose often depends on the spelling you are practising and what makes it difficult.

      Keywords

      • Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning

      • Letter string - a group of letters that are written together in a word

      • Silent letters - a letter in a word that is not pronounced when the word is spoken

      Common misconception

Pupils may assume that all curriculum words are common exception words.

Discuss that the list is made up of words with the rules they have learnt or should have come across. Discuss the rules some words use compared to words that may be exceptions.

      Teacher tip

Give pupils plenty of opportunities for self-reflection. Encourage them to take responsibility by looking back through their work and identifying any spellings that they regularly find challenging. Give them time to talk with others about what it is about these spellings that they find challenging.
