  • Think: knowledge of healthy, active living

Description

This unit will explore the immediate and short term responses our bodies make to cope with the effects of exercise as well as the longer term adaptations it makes in response to training that enable us to cope better with exercise and improve performance.

Pupils will already have in-depth understanding of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems as well as the impact of exercise intensity and duration on our ability to work aerobically. After they deepen their understanding of how the body responds to training they will move on to better understand how to train to improve health, fitness and sporting performance.

  1. Immediate and short term effects of exercise on the body
  2. A practical exploration of heart rate response to exercise and recovery
  3. Long-term effects of exercise

  • Pupils know our heart rate and cardiac output increase when we exercise
  • Pupils know how our cardiac muscle enables increased blood supply to working muscles during exercise
  • Pupils know our breathing rate and tidal volume increase when we exercise
  • Pupils understand training results in physiological changes that make exercise become easier
  • Pupils know that our heart rate gradually returns to resting levels of about 72 BPM after exercise
